The combination of pervasive computing and social computing leads to a new emerging research topic called ‘socially aware computing’. This new paradigm aims to leverage the large-scale diverse sensing devices that can be deployed in human daily lives to recognize individual behaviors, discover group interaction patterns, and support communication and collaboration. Smartphones, which are equipped with a variety of sensors and are popular around the world, bring new opportunities for socially aware computing. In this chapter, we introduce the defi nition of socially aware computing, discuss the main research challenges, and present our work of implementing socially aware computing by using smartphones.

Modelling Patient-Centric Healthcare Using Socially Intelligent Systems: The AVICENA Experience
One of the effects of population ageing is the increase in the proportion of long-term chronic diseases, which require new therapeutical models that mostly take place at the patients’ home rather than inside a health care institution. This requires that patients autonomously follow their prescribed treatment, which can be especially difficult for patients suffering some kind of cognitive impair...

The team collaborates with IT industries, and is comprised of academics with ex...
متن کاملLooking Under the Rug: On Context−Aware Artifacts and Socially Adept Technologies
Context−aware artifacts can be seen as an important class of socially adept technologies. In this paper, we focus on the fact that disregarding trivial notions of context, context−aware artifacts are far from being capable of recognizing situations. Similarly, we are not aware of any other technologies that are able to understand social settings in a non−trivial way. In this paper, we sketch th...
متن کاملChris Speed A Social Dimension for Digital Architectural Practice
This thesis proceeds from an analysis of practice and critical commentary to claim that the opportunities presented to some architectural practices by the advent of ubiquitous digital technology have not been properly exploited. The missed opportunities, it claims, can be attributed largely to the retention of a model of time and spaces as discrete design parameters, which is inappropriate in t...
متن کاملExperiences from Real-World Deployment of Context-Aware Technologies in a Hospital Environment
Context-aware computing is a central concept in ubiquitous computing and many suggestions for context-aware technologies and applications have been proposed. There is, however, little evidence on how these concepts and technologies play out in a real-world setting. In this paper we describe and discuss our experiences from an ongoing deployment of a suite of context-aware technologies and appli...
